Tutorial 8 Creating Chrome

Requirements: Adobe Photoshop 5.5
The Project:  Creating Chrome Text

Adobe Photoshop 5.5 version

Chrome text is a very common thing on the Internet and a lot of other ad media.  What really differs are how many ways to create it.  There are several ways in Photoshop 5.5 to accomplish the creation of chrome.  Below is I think the easiest way.

Picture 8-1

The text you create will look best with a black background.  So make sure to fill the background layer with black.  Now press T or click the type button on the toolbox and create your text to turn into chrome.  For the best results use a thicker type of text.

Now we need to select the text and make a channel from the selection.  So click and hold your CTRL button and click the text layer on your Layers Palette.  It will now be selected.  Click the Channels tab on the palette and click Create New Channel button shown in Picture 8-2 to the left.  Then fill the empty selection with white.

We need to blur the channel.  So go to Filter> Blur> Gausian Blur and use the setting in Picture 8-3
Now we need to give it some shape.  Switch back to the Layers tab and click your text layer.  Go to Layer> Type> Render Layer.  Then Filter> Render> Lighting Effects and use settings similar to the ones in Picture 8-4.  Make sure you select your texture channel you created as the Texture Channel.  Click ok.

Go to Image> Adjust> Curves.  Use settings similar to Picture 8-5.  Once you complete this you should have an image similar to Picture 8-6.

Looks good, but we need a finishing touch on our chrome text.  Glowing highlights!

Click Ctrl-D to deselect the type layer. Create a new layer.  Click J to access the airbrush tool.  Make sure white is your foreground color.  Now add some white airbrushing to where the brightest parts of the chrome.  When you are done.  Go to Filter> Blur> Gausian Blur and adjust the settings until you get the glow you like.  You should have a completed image similar to Picture 8-7
